Zomato Introduces Feature Allowing Users to Create Carts from Multiple Restaurants

Zomato, a popular food delivery platform, has introduced a significant change in its latest app update, allowing users to create multiple carts simultaneously. Previously, users could only add items from one restaurant at a time. With this update, Zomato users can now build carts from up to four different restaurants and return to complete orders from the remaining carts after checking out from one cart.

Notably, Zomato's archrival Swiggy does not currently offer this feature, although other apps like PhonePe's ONDC app and Rebel Foods' Eatsure provide the ability to create multiple carts. Zomato's decision to introduce this feature comes at a time when its gross order value for its food delivery business experienced a 1% decline to INR 6,569 crore in the March quarter, partly due to an industry-wide slowdown and its withdrawal from 225 cities in the previous quarter.

A Zomato spokesperson emphasized the company's commitment to constant innovation and evolution to enhance the customer experience. According to the spokesperson, the new feature allows customers to create multiple carts without the need to navigate back and forth across different menus.

Swiggy and Zomato have been engaged in intense competition, each striving to increase its market share in the $5 billion food delivery market. Currently, Swiggy holds a market share of approximately 45%, slightly lower than Zomato's 55% share. Swiggy's market share declined from over 52% in 2020 to around 45% in 2023, indicating three consecutive years of decline for the Bengaluru-based startup.

Despite the decline in market share, Swiggy's largest shareholder, Prosus, which owns 33% of the company, reported in its annual report that Swiggy's revenues grew from over $600 million to approximately $900 million in fiscal year 2023. Comparatively, Zomato's revenues stood at around $885 million.
