Born in the mid-1980s in Pathankot, Punjab, Chef Amrit's early inspiration came from his parents—his mother, a vegetarian home cook, and his father, a former army man with a talent for rustic Indian meals. Their guiding principle—"Simple but good"—avoided overpowering spices and unnecessary cream, instead celebrating the raw beauty of ingredients like eggplant, cauliflower, and spinach.

Amrit’s formal culinary training took him to Australia, but his heart brought him to Jackson Heights, New York, where he noticed something missing: passion in Indian food. “Everyone had a menu, but no one had soul,” he would later say.

A Journey Through the Kitchens of New York

After moving to the U.S. in 2013, Chef Amrit worked at a local Indian restaurant before joining the team at Rahi, a progressive Indian bistro in Manhattan led by Chef Chintan Pandya. Later, he helped build Adda in Long Island City, a place that came close to his culinary philosophy.

But Amrit knew he wanted something of his own—something rooted in tradition, inspired by his family, and named after someone dear to him: his daughter, Angel.

In October 2019, Amrit opened the first Angel Indian Restaurant in Jackson Heights. Focused on halal vegetarian food, the restaurant soon carved a niche in a neighborhood saturated with Indian eateries.
