Michelin-star chef Vikas Khanna to host Assam Tea Festival at his New York restaurant ‘Bungalow’ as part of 200 years of Assam Tea celebrations. The festival aims to promote Assam’s tea, cuisine, and culture globally.
In a significant step to bring India’s rich tea heritage to the global stage, Michelin-starred chef Vikas Khanna has announced plans to host an Assam Tea Festival at his celebrated New York restaurant, Bungalow. The initiative marks part of the global commemorations of 200 years of Assam Tea, a milestone in the history of India’s tea industry.
The announcement was made during a business roundtable organised by the Consulate General of India in New York, where Khanna was invited as the Guest of Honour. Speaking at the event, the chef shared his personal connection with Assam — a state he has visited over a dozen times — and expressed admiration for its vibrant culture, unique cuisine, and, most importantly, its world-famous tea.
"Assam’s tea is more than just a beverage; it’s a symbol of India’s soft power. Through this festival, we aim to introduce global audiences to Assam’s flavours, craftsmanship, and cultural richness,” Khanna said.
The Assam Tea Festival at Bungalow is envisioned as a curated experience that will pair premium Assam teas with region-inspired dishes, while also showcasing Assamese textiles, music, and storytelling. This initiative is expected to boost Assam Tea’s visibility in international markets and offer New Yorkers an authentic taste of the region’s legacy.
The Government of Assam has warmly welcomed the proposal and pledged full support to make the event a success. Officials believe that the festival could strengthen Assam’s brand identity globally and highlight its cultural heritage as part of India's growing influence in the world of gastronomy and lifestyle.
The celebration of two centuries of Assam Tea underscores not only the beverage’s economic importance but also its deep cultural significance. With Vikas Khanna’s global reputation and storytelling approach, the upcoming festival promises to be more than an event — it could become a milestone in positioning Assam Tea as a luxury cultural product on the world stage.
