New York’s Semma Retains Michelin Star for Third Consecutive Year
New York’s South Indian restaurant Semma, led by Chef Vijay Kumar, retains its Michelin star for the third year, celebrating authentic regional Indian flavors.
New York: Semma, a celebrated South Indian restaurant in New York City, has once again retained its Michelin star, marking the third consecutive year of this prestigious recognition. Helmed by Chef Vijay Kumar, Semma is currently the only Indian restaurant in New York to hold this coveted accolade, showcasing the authentic and diverse flavors of regional South Indian cuisine.
Semma first earned its Michelin star in 2022, becoming the first Indian restaurant in America to achieve this distinction. The restaurant has continued to impress diners and critics alike with its bold, heartwarming dishes that remain true to the essence of Indian culinary traditions.
The Michelin Guide describes Semma as a culinary destination that defies Americanized expectations of Indian food. "This is authentic Indian cooking that doesn't pander to American expectations. Dishes are spicy, but the heat is used as elegantly as it is liberally," the guide notes. Standout offerings include the mulaikattiya thaniyam, a flavorful childhood snack from the chef's own experiences, the iconic gunpowder dosa filled with potato masala, and the attu kari sukka, a tender lamb dish infused with rich, warm spices.

Semma's success comes alongside recognition for other Indian restaurants in the United States. Washington D.C.’s Rania, led by Chef Chetan Shetty, and Chicago’s Indienne, helmed by Chef Sujan Sarkar, have also retained their Michelin stars this year. Globally, Indian cuisine continues to shine, with Bangkok’s renowned Indian restaurant Gaa, under Chef Garima Arora, retaining its two Michelin stars earlier this year.
Semma’s sustained excellence highlights the growing prominence of Indian cuisine on the global stage, offering a refined yet authentic experience to its patrons while staying true to its roots.
