Pune is witnessing a rapid outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), with 101 cases and one death reported so far. Alarmingly, 28 of these cases emerged within the last 24 hours, and at least 16 patients are currently on ventilator support.  

GBS is a rare but potentially life-threatening autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks its own nerves. The condition often begins with tingling or weakness in the legs, which can progress to the hands and eventually impair respiratory muscles, necessitating ventilator support in severe cases.  

What is Triggering the Outbreak?

Medical experts have traced the outbreak to Campylobacter jejuni, a bacteria commonly found in contaminated food and water. Infections caused by consuming improperly cooked or raw food, unclean water, or unhygienic street food are believed to have triggered the surge in cases.  

It’s important to note that GBS is not contagious and cannot spread through contact with an affected person.  

Symptoms to Watch For

Early symptoms of GBS include:  

  • Tingling or numbness in the feet or hands.  
  • Weakness in the legs, making daily tasks like walking or wearing slippers difficult.  
  • Gradual progression of weakness to the arms and upper body.  
  • Difficulty breathing in severe cases.

Preventive Measures

Health authorities have urged the public to follow these precautionary steps to reduce the risk of infection:

  2. Wash Fruits and Vegetables Thoroughly: Contaminated produce can harbor harmful bacteria.  
  3. Drink Safe Water: Ensure drinking water is boiled or filtered to eliminate potential contaminants.  
  4. Stick to Pasteurized Milk: Always consume packaged milk or tetra-packs from reputed brands.  
  5. Boost Immunity: Incorporate vitamin C-rich foods such as oranges, guavas, and amla into your diet to strengthen your immune system.
