Misal Pav is a favorite among Mumbaikars and is commonly enjoyed as a breakfast or brunch item. It is also a popular street food and can be found in many food stalls and restaurants across India. Ingredients:

  • 1 cup moth beans (matki)
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 cup farsan (a type of spicy snack mix)
  • 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1 tbsp garam masala powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Pav bread (as required)

For garnish:

  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges

Method:

  • Soak the moth beans in water for 4-5 hours or overnight.
  • Drain the water and rinse the beans. Pressure cook the beans with 3 cups of water and a pinch of salt for 3-4 whistles or until the beans are soft.
  • Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  • Add chopped onions and sauté till they turn translucent.
  • Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala powder, and salt to taste. Mix well and cook for 5-6 minutes or until the tomatoes are soft.
  • Add the cooked moth beans with its water to the pan and mix well.
  • Simmer for 10-15 minutes or until the mixture thickens.
  • Garnish with chopped onions, coriander leaves, farsan, and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Serve hot with Pav bread.
