Kerala Secures Top Position in National Food Safety Index

Kerala, a state in India, has emerged as the frontrunner in the national food safety index published by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The state's Health Minister, Veena George, proudly announced this achievement, stating that it recognizes Kerala's unwavering commitment to maintaining streamlined and consistent food safety practices.

The fifth edition of the State Food Safety Index was released in New Delhi by Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya. This annual assessment, conducted by the FSSAI, evaluates states' performance across six crucial food safety parameters.

During the event, Dr. Mandaviya honored winning states in different categories. Kerala, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu received accolades in the Large State category, while Goa, Manipur, and Sikkim were recognized in the Small States category. Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh, and Delhi claimed the awards in the Union Territories category.

Highlighting the significance of healthy food, Dr. Mandaviya emphasized that wellness can be achieved through a nutritious diet. As part of government-sponsored initiatives, he announced plans to develop 100 healthy food streets nationwide. The minister commended the FSSAI for its pivotal role in ensuring food safety throughout India. He also drew attention to India's remarkable economic growth, noting that it has sustained a seven percent increase while major economies worldwide face sluggish growth.

Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prof. SP Baghel, encouraged individuals to prioritize indigenous food over junk food, promoting a healthier dietary approach.

The State Food Safety Index was introduced in the 2018-19 period as a comprehensive tool to drive states and union territories toward enhancing their food safety standards. It serves as a dynamic benchmarking model, evaluating performance on five key parameters: Human Resources and Institutional Data, Compliance, Food Testing Infrastructure and Surveillance, Training and Capacity Building, and Consumer Empowerment. The index aims to create healthy competition and catalyze positive change within the food safety ecosystem. By ensuring the availability of safe and nutritious food, it contributes to the well-being of citizens.

The implementation of the Eat Right Challenge further reinforces the promotion of healthy eating habits and the advancement of overall food safety and sustainability.

Kerala's remarkable achievement in securing the top spot in the national food safety index reflects its steadfast dedication to upholding food safety standards and ensuring the well-being of its residents. It sets an example for other states to prioritize and excel in this crucial domain.
