Woman Shares Restaurant's QR Code on Social Media, Receives a Bill of Approximately ₹50 Lakh

China:  Social media enthusiasts often share their dining experiences online, but for a woman in Kunming, China, this practice led to an astonishing bill of over ₹50 lakhs. The unsuspecting diner, identified as Wang, posted pictures of her hotpot meal on WeChat Moments, including the table's QR code meant for ordering and payment.

Despite Wang's restricted privacy settings, allowing only her WeChat contacts to view the post, a large number of people scanned the QR code and placed orders. Shockingly, the subsequent bill included 1,850 portions of fresh duck blood, 2,580 portions of squid, and a whopping 9,990 portions of shrimp paste, as reported by South China Morning Post.

Wang remained oblivious to the accumulating charges until a staff member approached her table to confirm the exorbitant order. Ultimately, the restaurant opted not to charge her the astronomical amount, relocating her to another table. Despite deleting the post, orders continued to be added to Wang's tab, sparking concerns and public debate online.

In response to the incident, the hotpot restaurant has adjusted its ordering system, implementing limits on the distance from which orders can be placed to prevent a recurrence of such unintentional billing mishaps. The story serves as a cautionary tale about the unforeseen consequences of sharing restaurant experiences in the age of social media.
