FDA Recalls Indian Spices and Imposes Import Detention Following Contamination Concerns

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has conducted an analysis of three spice products, namely Everest Garam Masala, Everest Sambhar Masala, and Maggi Masala ae Magic. Shockingly, the results have revealed that these products are contaminated with Salmonella. It should be noted that these spices were manufactured in India and were not intended for distribution in the United States.

Unfortunately, these contaminated products were imported to the United States and distributed to various retail stores across multiple states, including Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Maryland, Tennessee, Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Virginia, New Jersey, and New York, starting from March 16, 2023. Amin Trading LLC, realizing the contamination issue through test results, took the initiative to issue a recall on June 1, 2023. Under the supervision of the FDA, all remaining products in the possession of the recalling firm were promptly destroyed. For more detailed information about the recall, concerned individuals can refer to the FDA's Enforcement Report.

Given the extended shelf life of spices, there is a genuine concern that consumers may still have these products in their homes. To ensure public safety, the FDA advises consumers not to use the contaminated spices and to dispose of them immediately. It is important to note that no illnesses have been reported thus far in connection with the consumption of these products.

To identify the specific contaminated products, consumers should take note of the following details:

1. Everest Garam Masala, 100 grams, with the code U25D390373 and UPC: 8 901786 101009.

2. Everest Sambhar Masala, 100 grams, with the code U04D384296 and UPC: 8 901786 081004.

3. Maggi Masala ae Magic, 6 grams, with the code 20640 455AA.

Amin Trading Agency LLC purchased these spices, which were not intended for distribution in the United States, from retail stores in India and subsequently imported and distributed them within the United States.

Regarding Maggi Masala ae Magic, the FDA has been in contact with the manufacturer, who is currently investigating the situation. The foreign manufacturer responsible for Everest Garam Masala and Everest Sambhar Masala has also been notified and has issued a recall notice.

In response to this critical situation, the FDA has taken action by implementing "Detention Without Physical Examination Of Food Products Due To The Presence Of Salmonella" under Import Alert #99-19, ensuring that these contaminated products are prevented from entering the country.
