Tomatoes have become really expensive in India recently, causing a lot of trouble for people. In the shops, they are being sold for around Rs 100 per kilogram, and in wholesale markets, the prices have gone up to Rs 60- 70 per kilogram.
The reason for the high tomato prices is a combination of factors such as hot weather, low production, and delayed rainfall in many parts of India. This sudden increase in prices has caused problems for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which aims to control inflation.
According to few tomato traders, the prices of tomatoes have doubled in just two days. The supply of tomatoes from neighboring states like Haryana and Uttar Pradesh has decreased, and now tomatoes are being sourced from Bangalore. Unfortunately, the recent rainfall has damaged tomato plants that were on the ground, but those growing vertically with the support of wires have been saved.
According to a farmer from Maharashtra, farmers didn't use pesticides or fertilizers because the rates were not profitable. As a result, there was a rise in pests and diseases affecting the crops, leading to a decrease in production. Currently, the Narayangaon belt is supplying tomatoes to Gujarat, Rajasthan, Kolkata, The high tomato prices may not last in the upcoming weeks. Prices can decrease as harvesting from new areas will start soon. However, if there is heavy rainfall in regions like Himachal Pradesh and other areas where tomatoes are grown, then prices might remain high. and receiving inquiries from Delhi.
This shortage is expected to increase the prices of food items in eateries and restaurants, causing difficulties for consumers.
