Onion Prices Surge in Major Cities, Leaving Consumers Struggling
Onion prices soar across India, with rates reaching Rs 70-80 per kilogram in Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow. Consumers face budget strain as this essential vegetable becomes more expensive.
Onion prices have spiked sharply across India, causing concern for consumers as wholesale market prices soar from Rs 40-60 per kilogram to Rs 70-80 per kilogram. In the retail markets of Delhi, the current rate stands at around Rs 80 per kilogram, leaving many citizens distressed over the impact on household budgets.
A Delhi vendor explained that onion prices have risen from Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kilogram due to increased rates at the wholesale mandi. "Sales have decreased, but onions remain a staple, so customers are still buying, despite the price hike," he said.
Consumers are feeling the impact. Faiza, a Delhi resident, shared her worries, saying, "I bought onions at Rs 70 per kilo, which has affected our food habits. I urge the government to take steps to reduce prices for daily essentials." In Mumbai, Dr. Khan noted that the cost of both onions and garlic has doubled, placing further strain on household expenses. "I purchased 5 kilograms of onions for Rs 360," he said, emphasizing the burden this has placed on his budget.
Aakash, another buyer, drew a parallel with the stock market, saying, "Just like Sensex, onion prices will eventually come down. For now, though, we're all feeling the pinch."
With onion prices continuing to climb across India, sellers anticipate ongoing consumer demand for this essential vegetable, despite inflationary pressures.
