The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food-business licences of four Domino’s Pizza outlets after inspections found multiple food safety, hygiene and compliance deficiencies.
Three of the affected outlets are located in Mumbai — Vile Parle West, Borivali West and R-City Mall in Ghatkopar West — while the fourth is located in Malkapur, in Karad taluka of Satara district.
The action was taken during a special inspection drive targeting major restaurant chains. According to the FDA, the wider drive covered 104 establishments across Maharashtra and included brands such as Domino’s Pizza, KFC, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, Subway, Burger King, Starbucks and Monginis.
Inspections Conducted Between July 10 and August 11
According to the Maharashtra FDA, the action against the Domino’s outlets followed inspections conducted as part of a special drive that ran between July 10 and August 11, 2026, with the chain-restaurant inspections forming part of the wider enforcement campaign.
The FDA’s findings included shortcomings related to food storage, hygiene, pest control, temperature monitoring, sanitation, food testing, documentation and other mandatory food-safety practices.
The latest action comes amid an intensified food-safety enforcement campaign in Maharashtra under FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, who took charge of the department in May.
Three Domino’s Outlets in Mumbai Face Action
The three Mumbai outlets affected by the FDA action are operated by Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd., the company that operates Domino’s Pizza in India.
Vile Parle West
At the Vile Parle West outlet, FDA inspectors identified deficiencies involving the display of the FSSAI licence, potable water, food storage, pest control and hygiene facilities.
The outlet was directed to strengthen several food-safety measures, including proper temperature monitoring of frozen food, segregation of food and non-food items, rodent and pest prevention, and adequate hand-washing and hygiene facilities.
The FDA also flagged sanitation and food-preparation-related deficiencies at the premises.
Borivali West
The Borivali West outlet was found to have 15 per cent non-compliance, according to the FDA.
The deficiencies included food storage, temperature monitoring, food testing, cleanliness and pest control.
Inspectors also directed the outlet to ensure proper segregation of raw and cooked food as well as vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Regular sanitisation of equipment and utensils was also required.
R-City Mall, Ghatkopar West
The R-City Mall outlet in Ghatkopar West was found deficient in cleanliness, sanitation scheduling and pest-control measures.
The FDA also found that the outlet was not properly following FIFO (First In, First Out) and FEFO (First Expired, First Out) practices for food inventory.
Temperature control during food storage was another concern.
The authority additionally flagged the absence of food-grade certificates and records relating to equipment calibration, preventive maintenance, food testing, water testing and food-safety compliance.
Malkapur Outlet in Satara Also Suspended
The fourth Domino’s outlet facing action is located at Malkapur in Karad taluka of Satara district.
The FDA reported approximately 40 per cent non-compliance at the outlet, with deficiencies involving basic facilities, equipment, cleanliness and pest control.
The action against the Malkapur outlet was also taken against its food-business licence operated by Jubilant FoodWorks.
104 Chain Restaurants Inspected
The action against Domino’s was part of a much larger inspection campaign targeting major national restaurant chains.
The FDA said it inspected 104 chain-restaurant establishments during the special drive.
The establishments inspected included outlets of:
Domino’s Pizza
KFC
Pizza Hut
McDonald’s
Subway
Burger King
Starbucks
Monginis
Following the inspections, two establishments were ordered to stop business, while 95 establishments received improvement notices. The licences of five establishments were suspended, four of which were Domino’s outlets.
Wider Maharashtra Food Safety Crackdown
The latest operation forms part of a broader food-safety enforcement campaign across Maharashtra.
The FDA said that, overall, it had inspected 120 establishments over the preceding few days, issued 54 improvement notices and suspended 11 food-business licences.
The department has increasingly focused on food establishments ranging from restaurants and hotels to major branded chains, with inspections examining not only the quality and storage of food but also hygiene infrastructure, pest control, temperature management and mandatory food-safety records.
Licence Suspension, Not Permanent Cancellation
The FDA action should be understood as a licence suspension, rather than a permanent cancellation or revocation of Domino’s operations in Maharashtra.
The action applies to the specific food-business licences of the four inspected outlets. It does not mean that Domino’s Pizza’s overall operations or all of its outlets across Maharashtra have been shut down.
The affected establishments will need to address the deficiencies identified by the regulator and comply with applicable food-safety requirements before any resumption of operations is permitted by the competent authority.
No Statewide Domino’s Ban
The Maharashtra FDA's action is therefore limited to the four identified premises.
There is no indication in the FDA-related reports that Domino’s Pizza has been banned across Maharashtra or that the company’s overall food-business licence has been cancelled.
The findings instead relate to specific compliance failures identified during inspections at individual outlets.
FDA Tightens Scrutiny of Food Businesses
The action against a major national restaurant chain underscores the increasing scrutiny of food-safety compliance in Maharashtra.
The FDA's latest campaign shows that enforcement is being extended beyond smaller eateries and local food businesses to established national brands that serve large numbers of consumers every day.
For restaurants and food businesses, the inspections highlight the importance of maintaining compliance on an ongoing basis — from food storage and temperature control to pest management, sanitation, food segregation, testing and documentation.
The Maharashtra FDA has indicated that inspections and enforcement action against establishments failing to meet food-safety and hygiene requirements will continue.
