Ratan Tata, the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons and one of India's most respected industrialists, passed away late Wednesday night at the age of 86 in a Mumbai hospital. His death marks the end of an era for the Tata Group and Indian business. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran confirmed the news, describing Tata as a "friend, mentor, and guide."

After receiving a B.Arch. degree from Cornell University in 1962, he briefly worked at Jones and Emmons in Los Angeles before returning to India.
