PUNE, Maharashtra: A Pune resident, Sumit Pathak, experienced a jarring incident that has thrown Zomato's food safety measures under the spotlight. On January 13, 2024, Pathak ordered a vegetarian meal of Veg Kolhapuri, Veg Pulao, and Roti from Hotel Al Zaika – Dhanori through Zomato. However, his dinner took a shocking turn when he discovered pieces of chicken in the supposedly meatless Veg Pulao.
Taking to social media, Pathak expressed outrage and concern, questioning Zomato's responsibility for ensuring food safety and the restaurant's adherence to dietary preferences. His tweet, which read "Sent chewed non-veg bones in Veg pulao. It could be anything – Chicken, Mutton, and maybe Beef," quickly gained traction, raising significant doubts about the incident's origins.
Zomato responded promptly, apologizing to Pathak and promising a thorough investigation. They requested Pathak to share his order ID or registered phone number to expedite the process of addressing the issue. Following a phone call with Pathak, Zomato further assured him of their regret and willingness to assist.
However, Pathak hasn't let the matter rest. He hinted at the possibility of legal action against both Al Zaika and Zomato, suggesting that he might pursue redressal through official channels.
This incident has sparked heightened scrutiny into food safety protocols within online food delivery platforms and restaurants. The presence of non-vegetarian elements in a strictly vegetarian dish raises concerns about cross-contamination, negligence, or intentional mishandling. Both Zomato and Hotel Al Zaika face the pressure of providing a transparent explanation and ensuring stricter measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
