Maharashtra FDA Seizes Food Products Worth ₹63.45 Crore in Major Food Safety Crackdown
Authorities suspend 954 food licences and inspect nearly 9,700 establishments ahead
Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized food products worth ₹63.45 crore during a major statewide food safety enforcement drive conducted ahead of the Diwali festival. The operation highlights growing concerns about food adulteration, hygiene violations and the safety of products sold in the market.
According to official reports, the FDA inspected 9,667 food establishments between September 1 and November 3, 2026. During this period, authorities seized approximately 3,098 tonnes of food products, suspended 954 food business licences and collected 8,835 samples for laboratory testing. Additionally, 4,603 improvement notices were issued to businesses for violations of food safety standards.
The special festive-season campaign focused on products such as sweets, milk-based items, edible oils, spices, dry fruits and other commonly consumed food products. Officials also extended inspections to supermarkets, online food retailers and quick-commerce warehouses.
The crackdown comes at a time when demand for festive food products is increasing significantly. Food safety authorities have warned consumers to remain cautious about adulterated ghee, synthetic khoya, artificial food colours and expired products being repackaged for sale.
The FDA has also emphasised the importance of maintaining proper hygiene, storage conditions and valid food safety licences across food businesses.
This enforcement drive reinforces the importance of consumer awareness and strict regulatory monitoring in protecting public health. Authorities continue to encourage consumers to purchase food from reliable sources and report suspected food safety violations.
The message is clear: Food safety is not just a regulatory responsibility—it is a shared commitment between businesses, authorities and consumers.
