Hyderabad: According to a statement from Swiggy, a popular food delivery platform, a resident of Hyderabad who is a fan of Idli, spent an astonishing amount of Rs 6 lakh on this beloved South Indian dish within the last year.

During his travels to cities like Bengaluru and Chennai, the individual ordered a total of 8,428 plates of Idlis, which includes orders for his friends and family as well.

To celebrate World Idli Day on March 30th, Swiggy released its analysis of the period between March 30th, 2022 and March 25th, 2023, which offers fascinating insights into the widespread appeal of this beloved South Indian dish.

Over the past year, Swiggy has delivered a staggering 33 million plates of Idlis, highlighting its immense popularity among customers.

The cities that order the most Idlis are Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai, with Mumbai, Coimbatore, Pune, Vizag, Delhi, Kolkata, and Kochi following closely behind.

According to the analysis, the most popular time for ordering Idlis is from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., although dinner time also sees significant orders from customers in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Coimbatore, and Mumbai.

Across all cities, plain Idlis are the most popular variant, with a plate of two pieces being the most commonly ordered. However, Rava Idli is more popular in Bangalore than any other city, while ghee/neyi karam podi idli is favored in cities across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Additionally, Thatte idli and mini idli are also frequently ordered in all cities.

The analysis highlights that Idlis are not only a popular breakfast item but also a healthy one, often touted as the most important meal of the day. Swiggy found that Idlis are the second most ordered breakfast item after Masala Dosa.

Customers also tend to order other dishes such as sambar, coconut chutney, karampuri, medu veda, saagu, ghee, red chutney, Jain sambar, tea, and coffee along with their Idlis.

Swiggy's analysis also reveals the top five restaurants popular for their idlis, which are A2B - Adyar Ananda Bhavan in Bengaluru and Chennai, Varalakshmi Tiffins in Hyderabad, Sangeetha Veg Restaurant in Chennai, and Udipi's Upahar in Hyderabad.
