Food Delivery Costs Rise in India as Zomato and Swiggy Increase Platform Fees

Ordering food online just got a bit more expensive in India. Leading food delivery platforms Zomato and Swiggy have raised their platform fees by 20%, bringing the new charge to ₹6 per order in Delhi and Bengaluru. This fee is separate from delivery charges, GST (Goods and Services Tax), restaurant charges, and handling fees.

The increase is part of a trend for Zomato and Swiggy, who have been gradually raising platform fees since August 2023. This move is seen as an effort to improve their financial margins and achieve profitability. The companies project the new fee structure will generate an additional ₹1.25-1.5 crore per day in revenue.

It's important to note that this platform fee is currently only implemented in Delhi and Bengaluru, but it is expected to be rolled out to other cities across India in the near future.
