Swiggy Launches 24×7 Food Safety Helpline as Scrutiny of Food-Delivery Hygiene Intensifies

Swiggy launches a dedicated 24×7 food safety helpline and in-app reporting channel, allowing customers to flag food-safety concerns, upload evidence and track complaints.

Swiggy creates dedicated channel for food-safety complaints

Food-delivery platform Swiggy has introduced a dedicated 24×7 food safety helpline and an in-app reporting channel, giving customers a direct route to flag concerns related to the safety and quality of food ordered through its platform.

The move comes at a time when food-safety oversight across India's food-delivery and quick-commerce ecosystem is facing heightened scrutiny from regulators and consumers.

Customers can report food-safety concerns by calling 7948231850 or by accessing the “Food Safety” option under the Help section of the Swiggy app.

Unlike a routine customer-service complaint, food-safety reports submitted through the dedicated channel are reviewed by Swiggy's Food Safety Assurance Team, which is responsible for investigating such concerns and taking appropriate action.

How Swiggy's new food-safety system works

Customers who call the dedicated helpline can register their complaint with Swiggy's support team. Following the call, the company sends a link to the customer's registered mobile number, through which additional information and photographs related to the complaint can be submitted.

Customers choosing the in-app route can navigate to:

Swiggy App → Help → Food Safety

They can provide details of the issue, upload relevant photographs and submit the complaint. Swiggy then generates a ticket number, allowing the customer to track the complaint.

The company said the new reporting mechanisms will also help it identify recurring food-safety issues and emerging patterns, rather than treating every complaint as an isolated customer-service case.

Swiggy's Food Safety Assurance Team can use these insights to engage with restaurant partners and implement preventive measures where required.

Why the move matters

The initiative comes amid increasing attention on food safety across India's rapidly expanding food-tech ecosystem.

In recent months, regulators have stepped up inspections of restaurants, food-delivery operations and quick-commerce facilities, with concerns ranging from hygiene and sanitation to expired or improperly stored food products.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued notices to Swiggy Instamart following consumer complaints alleging issues including expired, spoiled and contaminated food products. The regulator also raised concerns relating to food-business licences and the identity of certain entities operating through the platform.

The development has placed additional pressure on food-tech companies to strengthen their systems for monitoring food quality and responding to consumer complaints.

Maharashtra's crackdown adds to industry pressure

The new Swiggy initiative also follows intensified enforcement by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Inspections of quick-commerce warehouses in the state resulted in the suspension of permits at multiple facilities after authorities identified food-safety and sanitation-related shortcomings.

The action highlighted a growing regulatory focus on the infrastructure behind India's rapid-delivery economy, where food and grocery products can move from warehouses or kitchens to consumers within minutes.

For platforms such as Swiggy, the challenge is therefore no longer limited to delivering orders quickly. Maintaining food safety, traceability and consumer confidence at scale is becoming an equally important part of the operating model.

Swiggy's food-safety efforts predate the helpline

The new helpline is not Swiggy's first attempt to build a formal food-safety framework.

In 2024, the company introduced Swiggy Seal, an initiative designed to recognise restaurants meeting enhanced hygiene and food-quality expectations, with customer feedback forming an important part of the programme.

Swiggy also partnered with FSSAI-accredited agencies to conduct hygiene audits of restaurant partners.

The company subsequently expanded its food-safety initiatives through its broader food-integrity and restaurant-certification efforts.

According to Swiggy's FY25 annual report, 2.95 lakh restaurants had received Seal accreditation, while the company has set a longer-term ambition of extending the programme to one million restaurant partners by 2030.

The dedicated complaint channel adds another layer to that framework by creating a more direct mechanism for consumers to flag potential problems.

From customer complaint to preventive action

The significance of the new system lies in the data Swiggy can potentially generate from these complaints.

A single customer complaint may highlight an isolated problem. But multiple complaints involving the same restaurant, food item or type of issue can reveal a broader pattern.

Swiggy's approach effectively creates a feedback loop:

Customer complaint → Evidence submission → Food Safety Assurance Team → Investigation → Restaurant engagement → Corrective/preventive action

This could allow the platform to identify recurring problems earlier and intervene before they affect a larger number of consumers.

A changing food-delivery landscape

India's food-delivery industry has expanded rapidly, with platforms increasingly competing not only on restaurant selection and delivery speed but also on reliability, quality and consumer trust.

The emergence of quick food delivery and rapid-commerce models has made the issue even more complex. Short delivery windows require tightly managed kitchen, storage, packaging and logistics operations, while the scale of these platforms means that even a relatively small food-safety failure can affect a large consumer base.

For Swiggy, the new 24×7 helpline therefore represents more than an additional customer-support option.

It is a move towards creating a formal consumer-led food-safety reporting mechanism, at a time when regulators, restaurants and food-tech platforms are under growing pressure to demonstrate stronger accountability across the food-delivery chain.

What consumers should know

Customers with a genuine food-safety concern can now use Swiggy's dedicated 24×7 helpline at 7948231850 or the Food Safety option in the Swiggy app.

Consumers should preserve relevant evidence, including photographs of the food, packaging, labels or other details that may help Swiggy investigate the complaint.

The new system also gives Swiggy an opportunity to turn consumer feedback into a broader food-safety monitoring mechanism — potentially making food safety a measurable part of how restaurants and delivery platforms are evaluated.

For an industry increasingly built around speed, Swiggy's latest move sends a clear message: faster delivery cannot come at the expense of food safety.
