Singapore’s High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, recently shared his disappointment on social media after trying a “tasteless chai” at a café in Gurugram. His post quickly went viral, gaining over 253,000 views, and sparked a lively conversation among tea lovers online.
Nitin Saluja, the founder of Chaayos, noticed Mr. Wong’s review and responded with a warm invitation. “Hon'ble Mr. Wong, I am Nitin, founder of Chaayos! I invite you for a cup of chai at a Chaayos near you! I’ll also share how we’re committed to getting every chai right, including our no-questions-asked chai replacement policy!” he wrote.
Netizens Suggest Roadside Chai
Many people on social media offered suggestions to Mr. Wong, encouraging him to try roadside tea stalls for a more authentic Indian chai experience.
“Sir, you should try tea from a normal stall where locals go. That’s where you’ll taste the real India,” one user commented. Another joked, “For ₹169, you and 16 others could have enjoyed chai from a roadside vendor without taxes!”
Some also pointed out that café prices often include extras like seating, ambiance, and free WiFi.
Invites for Homemade Chai
Several users invited Mr. Wong to try homemade chai. Touched by the overwhelming response, he replied, “The true beauty of India lies in her people. I am overwhelmed by the torrent of invitations to have a cup of the best homemade chai. I humbly thank you all.”
Others shared advice about where to find great chai. “The best chai is often from unexpected places, like street vendors. Maybe give those a try next time!” one commenter suggested.
Mr. Wong’s experience highlights not just India’s love for chai but also the warm hospitality of its people. Sometimes, the simplest offerings—like roadside tea—can leave the biggest impression.
