A family dinner in Surat turned tragic after five members of a family reportedly fell seriously ill following a meal ordered from a restaurant in the city’s Varachha area, resulting in the death of a five-year-old girl. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) subsequently sealed the restaurant after an inspection found several food-safety and hygiene-related lapses.
The incident reportedly took place after the family of Ashok Kalsaria, residents of Ranujadham Society in Varachha, ordered Punjabi dishes, including a cashew-paneer preparation, from Sheetal Restaurant on the night of August 15.
According to reports, the family members began experiencing health problems within hours of consuming the food. Five members—Ashok, his wife Jyotsna and their three daughters—were eventually taken to hospital after developing symptoms consistent with suspected food poisoning.
Five-Year-Old Girl Dies During Treatment
The youngest daughter, identified as Arya, reportedly died while undergoing treatment. Her body was sent for a panel post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
The death has intensified scrutiny of the restaurant and the circumstances surrounding the family's illness. However, authorities have not yet conclusively established that contaminated food from the restaurant caused the child's death. Medical, forensic and food-sample reports are expected to play a crucial role in determining the exact cause.
The other four family members were hospitalised. According to reports, the father was subsequently discharged, while the mother and two daughters continued to receive treatment.
SMC Seals Sheetal Restaurant After Inspection
Following the incident, officials from the Surat Municipal Corporation's health and food department inspected Sheetal Restaurant in Varachha.
During the inspection, officials reportedly found several hygiene and food-storage concerns. These included food items considered unfit, spoiled ingredients and food being stored improperly. Officials also reportedly found paneer and vegetables being kept uncovered.
Food items considered unfit for consumption were destroyed, while samples were collected for laboratory testing. The restaurant was subsequently sealed and issued an improvement notice over the reported hygiene deficiencies.
Food Samples Sent for Testing
The authorities are now awaiting laboratory findings to determine whether the food consumed by the family was contaminated and whether it was responsible for their illness.
This distinction is significant. While the sequence of events has raised strong suspicion of food poisoning, the investigation must establish a direct link between the restaurant's food and the family's medical condition.
The post-mortem examination of the deceased child and laboratory analysis of food samples are therefore expected to provide critical evidence.
Health Minister Takes Cognisance
Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya took cognisance of the incident and sought details from health officials regarding the condition of the affected family.
Following the incident, authorities also initiated a special food-safety inspection drive across Surat, with restaurants being checked for compliance with cleanliness, hygiene and food-safety requirements.
The case has once again raised questions over food hygiene and the importance of proper storage, preparation and handling practices in restaurants.
Investigation Underway
Police and civic authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the family's illness and Arya's death.
For now, the case remains one of suspected food poisoning, rather than a confirmed instance of food contamination causing death. The forthcoming post-mortem and laboratory reports will be crucial in establishing what caused the illness and whether any food-safety violations at the restaurant directly contributed to the tragedy.
The incident also highlights the potentially severe consequences of lapses in food handling and hygiene, particularly when restaurants serve food to vulnerable consumers, including children.
