Papa John’s Re-Enters India with ‘Mostly Vegetarian’ Menu and Bengaluru Launch, Eyes 650 Outlets in 10 Years

After an eight-year break, Papa John’s Pizza has re-entered the Indian market with a strategy tailored for local consumers — a “mostly vegetarian” menu designed to appeal to India’s large vegetarian population. The American pizza chain opened four dine-in restaurants in Bengaluru on October 10, marking the beginning of its renewed expansion plan across the country.

Four New Outlets in Bengaluru to Start

The newly launched Papa John’s restaurants are located in Indiranagar, Sarjapur Road, Electronic City, and Hennur, each spanning between 1,600 and 2,000 sq. ft. The chain has priced its pizzas between ₹149 and ₹799, placing it above competitors like Domino’s, which starts at ₹49.

The company aims to combine premium quality with local taste preferences, offering an international pizza experience adapted for Indian consumers.

Aiming for 650 Outlets Across India

Papa John’s plans an ambitious nationwide expansion of up to 650 outlets in the next 10 years. The brand’s immediate focus will remain on Bengaluru, where three more restaurants are expected to open by the end of October.

According to Tapan Vaidya, Group CEO of PJP Investments Group (the UAE-based joint master franchisee for India along with Pulsar Capital), the brand will add 30 restaurants within two years, before expanding into Chennai and Hyderabad, and later moving north.

Papa John’s entry into Hyderabad is planned for 2027, signaling a steady and region-wise rollout.

GST and Pricing: Impact on Pizza Business in India

A recent GST rate revision on pizza bread from 5% to 0% has boosted the affordability of pizza chains operating in India. While pizza bread is now tax-free, toppings still attract 18% GST. Dine-in customers pay 5% GST on the total bill, while takeaway or delivery orders are taxed at 18%.

Papa John’s expects these tax benefits, along with rising consumer spending and a growing middle class, to drive its growth in India.

Technology and Localization at the Core of Strategy

Globally, Papa John’s operates over 6,000 outlets. For its Indian comeback, the brand is investing heavily in technology, data-driven customer research, and localized menu innovation to ensure long-term success.

India is one of our priority markets,” said Ravi Thanawala, International CFO of Papa John’s, in a statement to Reuters. The company’s management plans to dedicate significant strategic focus to India, alongside China and the UAE.

Future Outlook: Building a Premium Yet Local Pizza Brand

With a strong re-entry plan and an India-centric approach, Papa John’s aims to position itself as a premium pizza brand that understands Indian taste and affordability. Its focus on vegetarian offerings and region-wise expansion could help the brand carve out a significant share of the country’s growing quick-service restaurant (QSR) market.
