McDonald’s India Launches Protein Plus Range with 100% Veg Protein Slice: A Bold Move into the Health-Focused QSR Segment
McDonald’s India (West & South) launches its Protein Plus Range with a 100% vegetarian protein slice developed with CSIR-CFTRI. The innovation marks a strategic shift toward health-conscious eating in the QSR industry.
McDonald’s India (West & South), operated by Westlife Foodworld, has taken a significant step toward health-conscious fast food with the launch of its new Protein Plus Range, introducing a first-of-its-kind 100% vegetarian protein slice that can be added to any burger. This innovation marks a pioneering shift in the Indian quick service restaurant (QSR) space, where personalizing protein intake at scale was previously unheard of.
For the first time, McDonald’s customers can enhance the nutritional value of their favourite burgers by adding one, two, or even three plant-based protein slices, each contributing 5 grams of protein — without compromising on taste.
A Scientific Leap in Fast Food Innovation
This protein slice, made from soy and pea protein, is the result of a collaboration with CSIR–Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), an esteemed institute under the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India. It contains no artificial colours or flavours, and is free from onion and garlic — making it suitable for a wide range of Indian dietary preferences.
According to Akshay Jatia, CEO of Westlife Foodworld, “The Protein Plus Range empowers our customers to personalise their protein intake while enjoying the signature McDonald’s taste. This aligns with our Real Food, Real Good philosophy, combining flavour, nutrition, and science to elevate the QSR experience.”
This marks McDonald’s India’s second partnership with CFTRI, following the launch of the Multi-Millet Bun last year — both initiatives aligned with the brand’s clean-label commitment of no added MSG, artificial colours, or preservatives.
Protein Counts That Matter
With the Protein Slice integrated, McDonald’s popular menu items now deliver significantly more protein:
-
McSpicy Paneer: 25.29g
-
McChicken: 20.66g
-
McVeggie: 15.24g
-
McAloo Tikki: 13.5g
The Protein Slice blends seamlessly into existing recipes, offering nutritional enhancement without altering taste or texture.
Can McDonald’s Now Fit into India’s Health-Food Segment?
With growing consumer awareness around protein intake, calorie balance, and cleaner eating, McDonald’s Protein Plus initiative may open up a new positioning opportunity in the health-food space — traditionally dominated by niche cafes and premium salad brands.
By offering accessible, affordable, and science-backed protein options in a familiar format, McDonald’s is bridging the gap between indulgence and nutrition — a space few QSR brands have managed to capture.
Dr. Sridevi Annapurna Singh, Director of CSIR-CFTRI, emphasized this potential, saying, “The Protein Plus slice is an outcome of science-backed formulation and a shared vision to elevate everyday meals through nutrition. Our collaboration reflects how industry and research can drive real change in mainstream diets.”
The brand's move aligns closely with FSSAI’s ‘Eat Right India’ movement, and was inaugurated in Mumbai by Shri Yogesh Kadam, Hon’ble Minister of State for Food and Drugs Administration, Government of Maharashtra. He applauded the initiative as a model for “strengthening India’s public health landscape through scientific and responsible food innovation.”
Protein-Powered Meals, Tailored for Everyone
The Protein Plus range is available in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals:
-
Vegetarian Protein Plus Meal: Burger with Protein Slice + corn cup + Coke Zero
-
Non-Vegetarian Protein Plus Meal: McCrispy Chicken with Protein Slice + 4-piece Chicken McNuggets + Coke Zero
All items are available across McDonald’s outlets in West and South India, including Drive-Thru and McDelivery services.
McDonald’s India has consistently adapted to evolving consumer demands — from millet buns to protein-packed innovations. With the launch of the Protein Plus Range, the QSR giant signals its ambition to not just serve fast food, but to redefine what fast food can be: clean, nutritious, and customisable.
In a world where health-conscious eating is becoming mainstream, McDonald’s India might just be preparing to compete not only with burger chains, but with health bowls and protein cafes too.
