Gunjan Soni Resigns as Independent Director of Zomato Due to Increased Professional Commitments
Gunjan Soni resigns as Zomato's independent director due to increased work commitments. Soni, CEO of Zalora, leaves during a period of leadership changes and stock surge at Zomato.
Zomato's independent director Gunjan Soni has stepped down from the company’s board, citing increased work commitments. Along with resigning from her directorship, Soni will also vacate her positions on Zomato’s risk management and corporate social responsibility committees.
Soni, an alumna of XLRI Jamshedpur, currently serves as the CEO of Southeast Asia-focused ecommerce platform Zalora. She has previously held leadership roles at Jabong (later acquired by Myntra) and has worked with prominent organizations such as Star India and McKinsey & Company.
In her resignation letter, Soni expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve on Zomato’s board, emphasizing that her decision to step down was driven solely by professional obligations. "It was a tough decision, but I remain confident in Zomato’s management team and its future direction," she stated.
Zomato’s co-founder and CEO, Deepinder Goyal, praised Soni's contributions, acknowledging her role in guiding the company through challenging times. "Gunjan’s insights and guidance have been crucial to our growth, and we are deeply thankful for her contributions," Goyal said.
Soni's departure follows a series of leadership changes at Zomato. Weeks earlier, co-founder and Chief People Officer (CPO) Akriti Chopra also resigned to explore other opportunities. In early October, Zomato brought in Kunal Khambhati, the former head of live events at BookMyShow, to strengthen its ‘going out’ vertical.
