Gujarat Fake Milk Factory Busted: FSSAI Raid Uncovers Synthetic Milk Made With Urea, Detergent and Oils
FSSAI raids Gujarat dairy unit in Sabarkantha, seizes fake milk made with urea, detergent and oils. Over 3,000 litres recovered.
A major food safety scandal has surfaced in Gujarat after officials busted an alleged synthetic milk manufacturing operation in Sabarkantha district. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) confirmed that a dairy unit was raided on February 8 following intelligence inputs suggesting large-scale distribution of adulterated milk in nearby areas.
Officials claim the unit had been preparing milk-like liquid by mixing chemicals and powders with limited real milk, raising serious concerns about consumer health in the region.
FSSAI Confirms Raid on Dairy Unit in Sabarkantha
The raid was conducted at a facility identified as Shree Satya Dairy Products, located near Salal village in Prantij, Sabarkantha. The operation was carried out by the Local Crime Branch (LCB) along with food safety officers.
Authorities suspect the dairy unit had been operating for years and supplying adulterated milk and buttermilk in parts of northern Gujarat. The factory was sealed soon after the raid, and officials began collecting samples for laboratory testing.
Fake Milk Allegedly Made Using Chemicals and Processed Dairy Powders
Investigators said the manufacturing process involved using chemical substances and edible oils to replicate the appearance and texture of real milk. The aim, officials believe, was to make the product look thick, white, and protein-rich enough to pass as genuine dairy.
Substances Reportedly Found at the Unit
Officials recovered materials commonly associated with synthetic milk preparation, including:
- Detergent powder
- Urea fertiliser
- Caustic soda
- Refined palm oil and refined soybean oil
- Whey powder
- Skimmed milk powder (SMP) and premium SMP powder
These ingredients were allegedly used to create an imitation dairy mixture that could be sold as milk and buttermilk.
Officials Say 300 Litres of Real Milk Was Used to Produce Nearly 1,800 Litres Daily
One of the most disturbing claims made during the investigation was the scale of production. Authorities stated that the unit was allegedly using only a small quantity of genuine milk—around 300 litres—to manufacture approximately 1,700 to 1,800 litres of synthetic milk every day.
The mixture was reportedly packed into pouches and circulated through local supply chains as regular dairy products.
Adulterated Milk and Buttermilk Supplied Across Gujarat Districts
Investigators believe the adulterated dairy products were being supplied widely, particularly in Sabarkantha and Mehsana districts. Officials are now working to identify distribution networks and determine how far the synthetic milk reached.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that similar products may have been sold in other regions as well.
Large Seizure Made: Milk, Buttermilk and Raw Materials Worth ₹71 Lakh Recovered
During the raid, officials seized a significant quantity of suspected adulterated products and chemical stock.
Seizure Details
According to reports, the raid resulted in the recovery of:
- Around 1,962 litres of suspected adulterated milk
- Over 1,100 litres of suspected adulterated buttermilk
- Raw materials and chemicals estimated at nearly ₹71 lakh
The recovered liquids and ingredients have been sent for further verification and scientific testing.
Unsafe Milk Destroyed On-Site, Samples Sent for Lab Examination
FSSAI also shared that a large portion of the seized milk was destroyed during the raid itself. Officials reportedly disposed of approximately 1,370 litres of unsafe milk to prevent it from entering the consumer market.
Food safety authorities have confirmed that multiple samples have been collected and sent for laboratory analysis to confirm the composition and identify the exact level of contamination.
Why Synthetic Milk is a Major Health Concern
Food experts warn that synthetic milk is not simply diluted milk—it may contain harmful substances that can cause serious health complications. Ingredients such as urea, detergent and caustic soda are not meant for human consumption and can cause long-term damage if consumed regularly.
Possible Health Risks of Adulterated Milk
Consumption of such milk may lead to:
- Stomach infections and food poisoning
- Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
- Kidney and liver complications
- Hormonal imbalance over prolonged intake
- Higher risk for infants, children and senior citizens
Health officials have advised consumers to remain alert and avoid buying milk from unreliable sources.
What Happens Next? Investigation Likely to Expand
The Gujarat fake milk case is expected to trigger deeper scrutiny of dairy supply chains in the state. Officials are now investigating how long the unit operated, where the products were distributed, and whether other similar factories exist.
If lab tests confirm the chemical composition, legal action is expected under relevant food safety and criminal laws.
