FSSAI Mandates QR Code Display at Eateries for Food Safety Complaints via App

In a significant move towards consumer empowerment and food safety, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has mandated all food business operators (FBOs)—including restaurants, cafés, dhabas, and other eateries—to visibly display their FSSAI licence or registration certificate along with a QR code that links to the Food Safety Connect App.

This initiative, according to FSSAI, is designed to make food safety monitoring more accessible and transparent. The QR code will allow consumers to instantly access key information about licensed and registered food businesses, submit hygiene-related complaints, and report any misleading claims made on food products.

“This step empowers citizens by offering a direct, user-friendly channel for grievance redressal on food safety matters,” the food safety authority said in a statement.

How it Works:

The QR code—now printed on the front page of every FSSAI licence and registration—will link directly to the Food Safety Connect App, enabling consumers to:

  • File food safety and hygiene complaints
  • Access details of the food establishment’s FSSAI registration
  • Report misleading food product claims
  • Stay updated on FSSAI’s food safety initiatives and alerts

Visibility is Key

FSSAI has clearly instructed that the licence and QR code must be placed in highly visible locations within food establishments such as:

  • Entrances
  • Billing counters
  • Seating areas

Additionally, the food safety body has also urged food business operators to integrate the QR code into their digital platforms, including official websites, online ordering systems, and food delivery apps wherever applicable.

Swift Complaint Resolution

One of the major benefits of the system is faster resolution. Complaints lodged through the app are automatically routed to the relevant local food authority, ensuring that concerns are addressed promptly and efficiently.

This nationwide advisory reflects FSSAI’s ongoing commitment to improving food quality standards and promoting transparency in India’s booming food and hospitality sector.
