Dead Cockroach Allegedly Found in Srisailam Laddoo Prasadam; Devotee Lodges Complaint, Temple Authorities Deny Charges
A devotee at Srisailam Temple in Andhra Pradesh claims to have found a dead cockroach in the famous laddoo prasadam, sparking hygiene concerns. Temple officials reject the allegations.
A serious allegation has surfaced against the revered Srisailam Devasthanam after a devotee claimed to have found a dead cockroach inside the laddoo prasadam offered at the temple. The incident, which reportedly occurred on June 29, has raised widespread concern among devotees and sparked a discussion over food hygiene standards at the historic temple.
The complainant, identified as Saraschandra K, stated that he discovered the insect moments before consuming the laddoo, which he had purchased from the temple counter. A video allegedly showing the contaminated sweet quickly circulated online, gaining traction across social media platforms.
According to a report by Disha Daily, Saraschandra was shocked by the discovery and immediately approached the temple staff. However, rather than addressing the issue, the staff allegedly attempted to seize the laddoo from his possession. Eyewitnesses at the scene also claimed that temple officials pressured the devotee to delete the video from his phone, raising questions about transparency and accountability.
Following the incident, Saraschandra submitted a written complaint to the temple’s Executive Officer, citing negligence in the preparation of the prasadam. His letter stated:
"On June 29, I visited the Srisailam Devasthanam and found an insect, specifically a cockroach, inside the laddoo prasadam. The Devasthanam staff is negligent while making the prasadam. I request immediate action to ensure food safety and hygiene."
Despite the public outcry, temple authorities have firmly denied the allegations. Executive Officer Srinivasa Rao assured that the preparation of prasadam follows strict hygiene protocols and is conducted under continuous supervision.
"There is no possibility of a cockroach entering the laddoo. The preparation process is closely monitored by our staff to maintain cleanliness and sanctity," he told NDTV.
He further urged devotees not to be alarmed and reiterated the temple's commitment to upholding the highest food safety standards.
Nonetheless, the incident has led to a wave of concern among pilgrims, especially considering the laddoo’s religious significance. Many devotees believe the prasadam is not just food but a sacred offering, and any contamination is seen as a serious violation of trust.
Authorities have not confirmed whether an internal investigation will be conducted in response to the complaint.
