Chennai Central Railway Station to Feature Unique "Restaurant on Wheels" Experience

Chennai Central Railway Station is set to offer a one-of-a-kind dining experience with the conversion of a condemned second-class coach of an EMU train into a "restaurant on wheels." The Southern Railways - Chennai Division has awarded a contract worth 95 lakh to a private business to transform the coach and operate this distinctive eatery. This innovative project aims to address the lack of dining options at the bustling railway station while providing customers with an enjoyable and unique dining experience.

Renovation and Transformation:

According to officials from the Southern Railway, the EMU coach will undergo a complete renovation and will be repainted before it is transformed into an air-conditioned restaurant. The interior of the coach will be designed to create an inviting dining atmosphere, incorporating elements inspired by rail travel. The renovated coach, along with its accompanying track, was recently delivered to Chennai Central Railway Station as part of the project, which also includes the establishment of similar eateries in Potheri, Kattankulathur, and Perambur.

Culinary Delights on the Move:

The "restaurant on wheels" will have the capacity to seat approximately 40 people, offering a unique dining experience within the EMU coach. Apart from serving prepared and processed food, the coach may also feature culinary facilities to provide wholesome meals that cater to the preferences of railway enthusiasts. The aim is to offer customers a memorable dining experience before they embark on their train journeys.

Selection Process:

In order to find experienced restaurant owners who can efficiently manage the establishment, an e-auction technique is being employed in response to a tender invitation from the Chennai division. This ensures a fair selection process that will result in the best candidates operating the restaurant on wheels. The Southern Railways is committed to ensuring that customers receive high-quality service and enjoy their dining experience.

Addressing a Need:

The decision to create a restaurant on wheels was prompted by the lack of dining options at MGR Chennai Central Railway Station, which witnesses a footfall of approximately three to four lakh passengers on a daily basis. Railway authorities recognized the need for a unique and convenient dining experience for travelers, and they believe that the restaurant on wheels will fulfill this requirement. With its proximity to the trains, passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy a meal or grab a quick snack before embarking on their journeys.
