Bhopal Launches Kachra Cafe—Turn Waste into Free Meals with Digital Coins

In a first-of-its-kind sustainability drive, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched Kachra Cafe, where citizens can bring recyclable waste and earn digital coins that can be redeemed for free food, drinks, and groceries at eco-friendly cafes across the city.

This innovative initiative is designed to solve two pressing problems:

  1. The lack of responsible and everyday recycling.

  2. The lack of motivation and incentives for people to recycle.

By turning waste into a valuable currency, Kachra Cafe is not just a garbage collection point, but a mission-driven social enterprise where environmental responsibility meets community rewards.

How Kachra Cafe Works

Residents can bring their recyclable waste such as paper, plastic, e-waste, beverage cans, metals, tyres, and even old AC units to designated collection centers. Instead of treating waste as useless, Kachra Cafe pays citizens with digital coins based on the type and weight of recyclables. These coins can be used to enjoy meals, beverages, or desserts at partner cafes.

The rates are higher than usual market scrap prices, giving citizens stronger motivation to recycle.

Sponsored by Bhopal Municipal Corporation

The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is the key sponsor behind this initiative. According to officials, the aim is to make recycling a daily habit while also improving the city’s waste management system.

The model has been inspired by successful “Garbage Cafes” in Chhattisgarh (Ambikapur) and Delhi, but Bhopal’s version is more advanced, as it accepts a wider range of waste materials and offers digital rewards.

Why Kachra Cafe Matters

  • Helps keep Bhopal cleaner and greener.

  • Reduces landfill pressure by recycling more effectively.

  • Provides food and support to communities.

  • Encourages people to see waste as value.

With such a unique concept, Bhopal is setting an example for other Indian cities, showing how sustainability, social welfare, and innovation can work together.
