A food safety inspection at Skyye Lounge in Bengaluru’s UB City has raised serious concerns over food storage and hygiene after officials reportedly found rotten meat covered with fungus along with expired milk and curd inside the establishment’s kitchen.
The inspection was conducted on Sunday, August 9, during a food safety enforcement drive in Bengaluru. Following the inspection, authorities shut the lounge’s kitchen over the reported violations.
The action puts the spotlight on food storage and hygiene practices even at some of the city’s high-end dining establishments.
Fungus-covered rotten meat found during inspection
According to the inspection report, food safety officials found rotten meat, including beef, with visible fungal growth inside the Skyye Lounge kitchen.
The condition of the meat raised concerns about whether food was being stored under appropriate temperature and hygiene conditions and whether expired or deteriorated ingredients were being removed from the kitchen in time.
The discovery is particularly significant because meat that has visibly deteriorated or developed fungal growth can pose a serious food-safety risk if it enters the food preparation chain.
Milk and curd found expired
Inspectors also reportedly found milk and curd packets that had expired around 10 days earlier.
The presence of expired dairy products alongside deteriorated meat added to the food safety concerns identified during the inspection.
For a commercial food establishment, proper stock rotation, expiry-date monitoring and disposal of unusable ingredients are fundamental food-safety requirements.
Skyye Lounge kitchen shut
Following the inspection, authorities shut the kitchen at Skyye Lounge.
It is important to distinguish this from saying that the entire Skyye Lounge was permanently closed. The available reporting specifically indicates that the kitchen was shut following the inspection over the food-safety concerns.
