Army Officer Assaulted After Food Poisoning Incident at NCC Camp in Kerala

Kochi, Kerala: A shocking incident has surfaced from an NCC (National Cadet Corps) camp in Kerala, where over 80 cadets were hospitalized due to suspected food poisoning, and a senior Army officer was assaulted within the camp premises. The attack, captured on video, involved a local councillor and a left-party leader.

The incident occurred on December 23 at KMM College in Thrikkakara, which hosted the 21 Kerala Battalion NCC training camp. Following complaints of food poisoning, the two accused, along with others, barged into the camp and assaulted Lt Colonel Karnail Singh, the commanding officer.

Disturbing Video Footage

The video footage shows the Lt Colonel being shoved against a wall by one of the men, who grabbed him by the throat. Another individual pinned the officer against the wall with his arm before the officer pushed him away. A man in a blue t-shirt is then seen brandishing what appears to be a knife and threatening the officer.

A police officer present at the scene intervened, pushing one of the attackers away and attempting to control the situation. Despite this, Lt Colonel Singh sustained injuries to his neck and back.

Food Poisoning Outbreak

The cadets initially reported discomfort after dinner on December 23. They were taken to a Primary Health Centre and later to a Medical College for treatment.

"These cadets were treated promptly in the OP department and sent back to the camp," an NCC official stated. A total of 513 cadets, including 283 boys and 235 girls, were participating in the camp. Of these, 47 additional cadets later exhibited similar symptoms.

Investigation and Legal Action

The Additional Director General of NCC has ordered a Brigadier-led panel to investigate the suspected food poisoning and submit a report. Meanwhile, police have filed cases of trespassing, criminal intimidation, and voluntarily causing hurt against the accused. A senior police officer is leading the investigation.

Public Outrage

The assault on a senior Army officer has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for strict action against the perpetrators. The incident has also raised concerns about the management and safety standards at NCC camps.
