Moviegoers in India may no longer need to leave their seats or stand in long concession queues when hunger strikes during a film. Swiggy Dineout has launched “Order-in-Cinemas,” a new in-seat food ordering service that allows customers to order food and beverages directly from their cinema seats.
The service, announced on August 25, has been introduced in partnership with Cinepolis and Asian Cinemas. It uses a QR-code-based ordering system that connects cinema food and beverage menus with the Swiggy Dineout platform.
How Swiggy Dineout’s Order-in-Cinemas works
The process is designed to keep moviegoers inside the auditorium while ordering.
Customers can scan a QR code placed inside the cinema hall, which takes them to the relevant food and beverage menu through Swiggy Dineout. They can select their items, place the order and complete the payment digitally.
Once the order is placed, the food is delivered directly to the customer's seat, eliminating the need to walk out of the screening or wait at a concession counter.
The service also gives moviegoers access to cinema-related information through the platform, including upcoming movie releases, trailers, posters, ticket-booking links, special screenings, events and promotional offers.
Cinepolis and Asian Cinemas among the first partners
The initial rollout brings together Swiggy Dineout, Cinepolis and Asian Cinemas, with technology integration supported by two point-of-sale platforms — Impact, operated by UFO Moviez, and Showbizz, a cinema software solutions provider.
Swiggy Dineout is also working on integrations with additional POS aggregators. The company said the service will expand across eligible cinema screens as these integrations progress.
The rollout is therefore not being positioned as a one-off feature limited to the current partners. The underlying POS integration could allow the model to be adopted by additional cinema operators as the technology expands.
A new revenue opportunity for cinema food and beverage
While convenience for moviegoers is the most visible part of the launch, the move has a significant foodservice business angle.
Food and beverages are an important ancillary revenue stream for cinema operators. By allowing customers to order without leaving their seats, cinemas can potentially capture orders that might otherwise be missed during a screening.
Swiggy Dineout says the platform can help cinemas encourage higher food and beverage spending per customer. Cinema operators can also use the system to recommend customised food combinations and promote additional offerings, creating opportunities for upselling and cross-selling.
This could make the ordering process less dependent on customers deciding to visit a concession counter before or during a movie.
Swiggy Dineout moves beyond traditional dining
The launch also represents a broader expansion of Swiggy Dineout.
Swiggy integrated Dineout into its platform in 2022, with the service traditionally focused on dining out, restaurant discovery, reservations, offers and payments.
With Order-in-Cinemas, Dineout is extending its digital ordering infrastructure into entertainment venues.
The distinction is important: this is not conventional Swiggy food delivery, where a delivery partner picks up an order from an outside restaurant and takes it to a customer. Instead, the platform is being used to digitise the ordering experience for food and beverages already being sold within the cinema environment.
That puts Swiggy closer to the operational layer of cinema foodservice, connecting customers, menus, payments and cinema POS systems.
Swiggy aims to make food ordering part of the movie experience
Swapnil Bajpai, CEO, Swiggy Dineout & Scenes, said the initiative is intended to make food ordering a more seamless part of the movie-going experience while creating new business opportunities for cinemas.
The approach reflects a wider shift in foodservice, where digital ordering is increasingly being used not only for delivery but also for on-premise consumption.
Restaurants, stadiums, airports and entertainment venues have increasingly adopted QR-based and app-based ordering to reduce queues and make transactions more convenient. Cinema halls represent another environment where customers are physically present but may still prefer digital ordering.
What this means for the cinema food business
For cinema operators, the potential benefit goes beyond convenience.
A customer who does not want to miss a key scene may avoid visiting the concession counter altogether. In-seat ordering removes that barrier and gives the customer an alternative way to purchase food during a screening.
The digital format can also provide cinemas with more opportunities to promote combinations, add-ons and other food and beverage offerings at the point of purchase.
For Swiggy, meanwhile, the model provides another use case for its dining technology and expands Dineout's role beyond restaurants.
The company currently describes Swiggy as a broad convenience platform that includes services such as Swiggy Dineout and Swiggy Scenes alongside its food delivery and quick-commerce businesses.
More cinema integrations could follow
The immediate rollout is centred on Cinepolis and Asian Cinemas, but Swiggy's ongoing work with additional POS aggregators could determine how widely the service can eventually be deployed.
If more cinema chains and POS systems are integrated, in-seat digital ordering could become a more common part of India's multiplex food and beverage ecosystem.
For now, however, the launch marks a clear shift: Swiggy Dineout is taking its digital dining infrastructure inside cinema halls, turning the cinema seat itself into a potential food-ordering point.
The move could benefit both sides — moviegoers get food delivered without leaving the film, while cinema operators gain another digital channel to drive food and beverage sales.
