Reliance Consumer Products Limited (RCPL) is stepping up its efforts to establish a stronger presence in India's packaged food market with a significant expansion of its Independence biscuit portfolio. The company has introduced nine new biscuit variants across 28 stock-keeping units (SKUs), covering everyday consumption as well as more indulgent snacking preferences.
The expanded portfolio became available across Tamil Nadu on November 2, 2026, with Reliance planning a gradual rollout in other markets.
The latest move underlines the company's growing interest in the biscuits category, one of India's most competitive packaged food segments, where established players have built extensive distribution networks and strong consumer loyalty over several decades.
By introducing a wider range of products at multiple price points, Reliance is looking to reach consumers across different purchasing preferences, from individual trial packs to larger household purchases.
Nine new variants across everyday and indulgent categories
The expanded Independence portfolio includes nine products: Independence Power Up, Independence Butter Bliss, Independence Milky Power, Independence Marie Prime, Independence Coco Vanilla & Chocolate, Independence CremYum Orange, Independence CremYum Choco, Independence Coco Bourbon and Independence Glucose Boost.
The range covers several familiar biscuit formats, including milk biscuits, glucose biscuits, cream-filled products, Marie biscuits and chocolate-based offerings.
Two products receiving particular attention in the expansion are Independence Power Up and Independence Milky Power.
Independence Power Up combines milk, glucose and protein in a single biscuit, giving the company a differentiated proposition within the everyday biscuit category. The product builds on the familiarity of milk-based biscuits while introducing a nutritional positioning around its ingredients.
Independence Milky Power is another addition targeting consumers who prefer milk-based biscuits.
The remaining products extend the portfolio into traditional and indulgent segments, allowing the brand to address a wider range of consumption occasions, including tea-time snacking, everyday household consumption and sweet cravings.
Pricing starts at ₹5 as Reliance targets multiple consumer segments
Pricing is an important part of Reliance's latest portfolio expansion.
The new Independence biscuit range will be available in multiple pack sizes, with trial packs priced at ₹5, sharing packs at ₹10 and larger household packs ranging from ₹40 to ₹125.
This approach allows the company to address different purchasing habits while keeping the brand accessible to price-conscious consumers.
The entry-level pricing is particularly relevant in India's biscuit market, where small packs continue to play an important role in everyday retail purchases.
At the same time, the larger packs provide an opportunity to target household consumption and consumers looking for greater quantities.
Rather than relying on a single flagship product, RCPL is using a broader portfolio to build visibility across multiple biscuit categories and price segments.
Tamil Nadu becomes an important market for the expansion
Reliance has chosen Tamil Nadu as the initial market for its expanded Independence biscuit portfolio.
The products are being introduced across the state, with the company identifying Tamil Nadu as a key market for its biscuit business.
RCPL also expects increased production capacity to support the expanded product range, improve distribution and help the company reach more consumers.
The company plans to distribute the biscuits through general trade outlets, national and regional modern trade stores, e-commerce platforms, Reliance Retail outlets and wholesale channels.
The combination of traditional retail and organised distribution is expected to play an important role in building product availability.
While the initial rollout is focused on Tamil Nadu, Reliance has indicated that the portfolio will gradually enter other markets. The company has not announced a detailed state-wise expansion schedule.
Ajith Kumar Racing association to support Power Up's launch
Alongside product expansion, RCPL is also using brand partnerships to strengthen consumer awareness.
The company has associated with Ajith Kumar Racing to support the launch of Independence Power Up.
The association connects the product's positioning with the performance-oriented image of motorsport and is intended to improve brand visibility and consumer awareness, particularly in Tamil Nadu.
The partnership also gives Reliance an opportunity to connect with a wider audience in a market where Ajith Kumar has a significant following.
For an everyday consumer product, such associations can help create visibility beyond conventional retail advertising, particularly during the initial stages of a market launch.
Reliance follows a two-pronged strategy with Independence and Maliban
Reliance's biscuit ambitions are not limited to the Independence brand.
RCPL is pursuing a two-part approach to building its presence in the category. While Independence is intended to drive scale through everyday and indulgent biscuit offerings, Maliban, its joint venture partner and a leading Sri Lankan biscuit manufacturer, is positioned around differentiated and premium products.
The strategy allows the company to address different consumer segments through separate brand propositions.
Independence provides an opportunity to compete across accessible price points and established biscuit categories, while Maliban brings a different product positioning and biscuit-making heritage to the portfolio.
Together, the two brands give RCPL a broader platform to develop its packaged biscuit business.
India's biscuit market has long been dominated by established companies with extensive manufacturing capabilities, strong distribution networks and familiar brands. Competition spans affordable glucose biscuits, everyday tea-time products, cream biscuits and premium indulgent offerings.
Reliance's latest expansion signals that the company intends to compete across several of these segments rather than build its biscuit business around a limited number of products.
Its approach combines accessible pricing, a wider product portfolio, manufacturing capacity and access to multiple retail channels.
However, entering a category with established consumer preferences is not simply a question of introducing more variants. Consistent product quality, repeat purchases, retailer acceptance and distribution reach will ultimately determine how successfully the brand can establish itself.
For now, the expansion of Independence into nine variants and 28 SKUs marks another important step in RCPL's broader FMCG ambitions.
With the initial rollout beginning in Tamil Nadu and further market expansion planned, Reliance is positioning Independence as a wider biscuit portfolio rather than a single-product proposition. The company's ability to turn that breadth into sustained consumer demand will be closely watched by the Indian packaged food industry.
