India extends a helping hand: 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat donated to Afghanistan Amidst food crisis

As Afghanistan faces severe food crises, India has stepped forward to provide much-needed assistance by donating 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat to the landlocked country. The wheat shipment arrived in Herat city, according to the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP).
In a tweet, UNWFP stated, "Wheat donated by the Government of #India @MEAIndia @dpa_meato @WFP arrived in Herat where it was milled for distribution to hungry families across #Afghanistan. This wheat is part of an in-kind contribution of 10,000 metric tons from India on top of 40,000 tons in 2022."

Last month, India also sent an additional 20,000 metric tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan through Iran's Chabahar port. This move showcases India's commitment to promoting stability and prosperity in Afghanistan by expanding channels for aid distribution.
The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, exacerbated by the Taliban's rule, has left the country in dire need of assistance. The Afghan people, particularly women, are facing significant challenges, with basic rights being denied. According to the World Food Programme, Afghanistan is among the nations with extreme food insecurity, affecting nine million people who are grappling with economic difficulties and hunger.
Since the Taliban's takeover in August 2021, the security situation in Afghanistan has worsened, marked by increased incidents of terrorism and explosions. The group has imposed restrictions on women's education and employment, including banning them from attending schools and universities and working with aid agencies.
India's timely aid contributions aim to alleviate the suffering of the Afghan people and support their journey towards stability and development.
