Harajuku Tokyo Café Raises ₹19 Crores in First Institutional Funding Round, Plans Aggressive Expansion

Harajuku Tokyo Café, India’s fastest-growing authentic Japanese casual dining and quick-service restaurant (QSR) chain, has successfully raised ₹19 crores in its first institutional funding round. The structured investment was led by Indian Angel Network (IAN) with participation from Samved VC, LetsVenture, and venture debt fund Capitar Ventures.

The capital will fuel the company’s aggressive expansion strategy, with plans to scale operations across multiple Indian cities and beyond. The round remains open with additional capital expected to be raised in the coming months.

Mumbai Launch Boosts Growth Momentum

The funding comes shortly after Harajuku’s highly successful Mumbai debut at Jio World Drive, BKC, where both Harajuku Tokyo Café and Harajuku Bakehouse received an overwhelming response in July 2025.

Founded in 2021 by Gaurav Kanwar, the brand has quickly grown into a leader in Japanese dining in India, with 7 operational outlets across Delhi NCR and Mumbai, and achieving annual recurring revenue (ARR) of ₹30+ crores.

With Letters of Intent already signed for 15 new outlets across Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Ludhiana, and Chandigarh, Harajuku aims to reach 90 outlets across 20 cities and achieve ₹200+ crores in revenue by 2027.

Founder’s Vision

Commenting on the milestone, Gaurav Kanwar, Founder and CEO of Harajuku Tokyo Café, said:

“This funding strengthens our vision of democratizing Japanese cuisine in India. What started as a passion project has now evolved into a scalable business model that resonates with India’s evolving palate. With our Mumbai launch exceeding expectations and this investment secured, we are positioned to become India’s leading Japanese dining brand.”

Unique Brand Positioning

Harajuku Tokyo Café has carved a niche in the Indian market by combining authentic Japanese flavors with Instagram-worthy dining experiences.

Signature offerings include:

  • Jiggly Japanese pancakes

  • Conveyor belt sushi

  • Naruto ramen

  • Japanese cotton cheesecakes

The outlets also feature Tokyo-inspired décor, manga libraries, robot DJs, and vibrant Harajuku-style interiors, creating a cultural bridge between Japan and India.

Backing from Leading Investors

The round was co-led by seasoned IAN investors Hari Balasubramanian, Uday Chatterjee, Pradeep Jai Singh, and Sri Prakash, who bring extensive strategic and operational expertise.

Balasubramanian praised the execution, stating:

“Gaurav and his team have masterfully brought authentic Japanese cuisine to the mass market while maintaining high quality and building strong brand affinity.”

Samved VC Partner Vivek Khare, also a loyal customer, said:

“This investment comes from the heart. The founder’s passion for every detail—menu, hygiene, branding, and scaling—is infectious. It’s a business I genuinely believe in.”

LetsVenture, led by Shanti Mohan, also participated in the round, further validating Harajuku’s business potential.

Technology and Culinary Innovation

Harajuku operates through two scalable formats:

  • Harajuku Tokyo Café (full-service dining)

  • Harajuku Bakehouse (quick-service)

With a central kitchen in Delhi NCR handling 85% of food preparation, the brand ensures consistent quality and fast service across outlets.

The company also integrates technology across operations, including:

  • AI-powered inventory management

  • Tech-driven loyalty programs

  • Digital ordering and customer experience systems

Renowned Japanese chefs Asami Indo and Nariaki Higuchi collaborate with Harajuku, ensuring cultural authenticity and innovation in menu development.

Expanding Beyond Dining

Apart from physical outlets, Harajuku is also venturing into the D2C packaged food space with its vertical KoiKoi Essentials, offering ramen kits, sauces, and frozen meals for at-home Japanese dining experiences.

The brand is also exploring international opportunities, with discussions underway for franchise partnerships in the UAE and other diaspora-rich markets.

Strong Brand Recognition

Harajuku has quickly become a social media sensation, with offerings like conveyor belt sushi and jiggly pancakes garnering over 3 million organic views online.

The brand has also won multiple prestigious awards, including:

  • Restaurateur of the Year (Restaurant India)

  • Best Asian Specialty Casual Dining (NDTV Food Awards)

  • Best Japanese Casual Dining (Times Food Awards)

  • Foreign Cuisine Restaurant of the Year (Indian Restaurant Awards)

The Road Ahead

By 2030, Harajuku Tokyo Café envisions becoming India’s definitive Japanese lifestyle brand, expanding into dining, packaged foods, and cultural experiences.

As Kanwar concluded:

“Our goal is simple—when people in India think of Japanese cuisine, the first name that comes to mind should be Harajuku Tokyo Café.”
