Delhi Couple Claims Restaurant Denied Entry Over Indian Attire, Video Sparks Outrage Online
Delhi couple alleges Tubata restaurant in Pitampura denied entry for wearing Indian attire. Viral video sparks outrage and government action.
A Delhi restaurant is facing backlash after a couple alleged they were denied entry for wearing traditional Indian attire. The incident, which took place on August 3 at Tubata, a popular eatery located near Pitampura Metro Station, has gone viral on social media, sparking a heated debate over dress codes and cultural respect.
In the now-viral clip, the woman can be seen wearing a churidaar-kurta set, while her partner wore a T-shirt and pants. The couple alleged that the restaurant’s management stopped them at the entrance, claiming their attire was inappropriate according to the establishment’s policy.
“This was our dress, but they stopped us. Others in skimpier clothes were allowed inside. The manager misbehaved and insulted Indian culture,” the couple said in the video.
The video was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by user Rosy, who wrote: “See what is happening in Delhi restaurant Tubata in Pitampura. A couple was denied entry just because they were wearing Indian attire!”
In the footage, the person recording can be heard asking, “Is wearing Indian clothes against our culture? Are their clothes inappropriate? Such restaurants should be shut down immediately if they are against our culture.
Mixed Reactions on Social Media
The incident has triggered divided opinions online.
While many users condemned the act as discriminatory and disrespectful toward Indian traditions, others argued that private establishments have the right to enforce dress codes.
Some comments included:
“If this happened abroad, we’d call it racism. Here, it’s just dress code policy. Self-hate is the ugliest fashion trend.”
“Well done, it’s private property. All restaurants have ‘Rights of Admission Reserved.’ Don’t make a scene for fame. Just go somewhere else.”
“We are aliens within our own country.”
Others shared personal experiences, recalling being denied entry to pubs or clubs in cities like Bengaluru for not meeting specific dress code requirements.
Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra addressed the controversy, telling PTI:
"A video surfaced showing a couple being denied entry to a restaurant near Pitampura Metro Station because the woman was wearing Indian attire. The restaurant reportedly had a policy of not allowing Indian attire. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta took cognisance of the video and directed me to inquire into the matter."
Following an inquiry by the District Magistrate and a municipal officer, the restaurant owner confirmed that such a policy would no longer be implemented.
Public Debate Over Cultural Sensitivity
This incident has reignited the debate on cultural sensitivity versus business autonomy. While some believe restaurants should have the freedom to maintain certain dress codes, others argue that rejecting Indian attire in India is a direct insult to national identity and traditions.
The discussion continues online, with many calling for clear transparency in dress code policies to avoid such disputes in the future
