Blinkit Introduces EMI Facility for Orders Above ₹2,999; Reactions are Mixed

Zomato-owned Blinkit has launched a new EMI payment option for its customers, making it easier for them to pay for orders costing more than ₹2,999. The company announced this feature on Thursday, aiming to improve affordability and help customers manage their finances better. However, the EMI option does not apply to orders that include gold or silver coins.

Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "We have introduced buying with EMI on Blinkit! EMI options will be applicable on all orders above ₹2,999 (except orders that contain gold and silver coins). We believe this will improve affordability and enable better financial planning for our customers."

Mixed Reactions from Social Media

Many users on social media welcomed the move, with some praising Blinkit's innovation. One user expressed optimism, saying, “You will replace Amazon soon! Way to go, just Blinkit!” Another user noted, “I'm starting to see the vision to be king of the ‘jungle’. Rooting for you guys!” Others appreciated the company's creativity.

However, some users voiced concerns about offering EMI options for basic necessities like groceries. One user warned, "EMI on basic necessities such as provisions and groceries is a recipe for disaster for a generation that is low on savings and high on debts." Another added, "Disaster in making for personal financials!"

New Seller Hub Initiative

In addition to the EMI feature, Blinkit also launched a new programme called "Seller Hub" on Wednesday. This platform allows brands to sell directly on Blinkit without the need for intermediaries. Sajal Gupta, Blinkit's Chief Technology Officer, shared this update on X, highlighting the ease of selling through the self-serve platform.

The introduction of the EMI option and the Seller Hub reflect Blinkit's efforts to enhance its services and cater to a broader audience, but only time will tell how these initiatives will impact customer financial habits.
