Bhumi Pednekar & Samiksha Pednekar Introduce Backbay – A Premium Himalayan Natural Mineral Water Brand in Eco-Friendly Cartons
Bhumi Pednekar and sister Samiksha Pednekar launch Backbay, a premium Himalayan natural mineral water brand in eco-friendly cartons. Combining wellness, sustainability, and design, Backbay aims to revolutionize India’s hydration market.
Actor and climate advocate Bhumi Pednekar has teamed up with her sister, lawyer-turned-entrepreneur Samiksha Pednekar, to launch Backbay, a new-age beverage brand aiming to transform India’s premium hydration market. Positioned at the intersection of wellness, sustainability, and design, Backbay’s first offering is Himalayan natural mineral water, enriched with naturally occurring minerals and electrolytes, packaged in FSC-certified paper cartons with plant-based caps.
The water is sourced directly from a women-led facility in Himachal Pradesh, where glacial melt filters through mineral-rich rock formations, naturally absorbing magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Drawn from a protected Himalayan reservoir, it offers a crisp, clean taste while being naturally alkaline.
“Despite being the most essential beverage, water hasn’t seen meaningful innovation in years,” says Bhumi Pednekar. “Most bottled water in India comes in plastic, raising concerns about microplastics and environmental impact. Backbay reimagines hydration with a product that is clean, safe, and planet-friendly.”
The premium bottled water comes in two sizes – a 500 ml pack for on-the-go use and a 750 ml pack for home, office, wellness centers, restaurants, and HoReCa establishments. Its eco-conscious design ensures durability against India’s extreme heat without chemical leaching, making it a safer alternative to PET bottles.
Samiksha Pednekar highlights the brand’s mission:
“The bottled water category is saturated with vague claims and plastic pollution. Backbay Aqua stands for integrity, conscious sourcing, and functional hydration, offering consumers a transparent and sustainable bottled water option.”
Market Launch & Availability
Backbay Aqua will roll out in late August across select Indian cities through Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, Amazon, and its own D2C platform. It will also be available at Nature’s Basket, Foodstories, and through select hospitality and wellness partners.
The launch comes at a time when India’s functional hydration market is growing at a CAGR of 13.2% till 2028, driven by demand for clean-label beverages, eco-friendly packaging, and alkaline water.
With Backbay, Bhumi and Samiksha Pednekar aim to fill a gap in the market by offering premium Himalayan mineral water in sustainable paper cartons, blending wellness, transparency, and style in every sip.
